201 series stainless steel is a nickel-saving austenitic stainless steel with high manganese and low nickel content, widely used as a cost-effective alternative to 304 stainless steel in civil decoration and light industrial manufacturing. The J1, J2, J3, and J5 are commercial customized sub-grades exclusive to the Chinese stainless steel industry, differentiated by precise adjustments of carbon, copper, chromium, and manganese ratios. These formula differences directly determine the material’s ductility, hardness, bending performance, polishing effect, corrosion resistance and final application scenarios.
The overall performance rule of the four grades is fixed in the industry:
Copper Content & Corrosion Resistance: J1 > J3 > J2 > J5
Carbon Content & Hardness: J5 > J2 > J3 > J1
Ductility & Processing Performance: J1 > J3 > J2 > J5
Market Price: J1 > J3 > J2 > J5
2. Chemical Composition (wt%, Industrial Standard Range)
The core difference among J-series grades lies in carbon and copper content. Lower carbon and higher copper bring better toughness and anti-rust ability, while higher carbon and lower copper reduce cost but sacrifice processability and corrosion resistance.
| Element | 201 J1 | 201 J3 | 201 J2 | 201 J5 | Function |
| C (Carbon) | 0.09–0.11 | 0.11–0.13 | 0.15 | 0.13–0.15 | Higher carbon = higher hardness, poorer bending toughness, easier rusting |
| Cr (Chromium) | 13.8–14.2 | 14.3–14.7 | 13.5~15.5 | 13.0–13.4 | Core anti-corrosion element; lower chromium weakens oxidation resistance |
| Ni (Nickel) | 1.10–1.30 | 1.05–1.25 | 1.00–1.20 | 0.95–1.15 | Improves ductility and structural stability |
| Mn (Manganese) | 9.8–10.5 | 8.8–9.4 | 8.0-11.0 | 10.2–10.8 | Replaces nickel to stabilize austenite structure |
| Cu (Copper) | 0.70–1.00 | 0.50–0.65 | 0.5 | 0.15–0.30 | Key element for stretching, bending and anti-rust performance |
| Si / P / S | ≤1.50 / ≤0.045 / ≤0.030 | ≤1.50 / ≤0.045 / ≤0.030 | ≤0.75 / ≤0.06 / ≤0.015 | ≤1.50 / ≤0.045 / ≤0.030 | Impurity control for welding and surface quality |

4. Grade-by-Grade Detailed Characteristics & Processing Performance
4.1 201 J1 (High Copper & Low Carbon, Premium Processable Grade)
J1 is the most versatile grade in the 201 J series. With the highest copper content and lowest carbon content, it delivers excellent ductility and forming performance. It supports large-angle bending, grooving, shallow & medium deep drawing without cracking. It has the best indoor corrosion resistance and stable welding performance among all four grades. The surface is smooth after polishing, with few pitting and fogging issues, suitable for high-standard wire drawing, color plating and 8K mirror finishing.
Limitations: Higher cost; not suitable for outdoor, coastal, rainy or high-salt environments.
4.2 201 J3 (Balanced Cost-Performance Grade)
J3 adopts a moderate carbon and copper formula, balancing mechanical performance and market price. Its hardness is slightly higher than J1, with acceptable ductility for simple bending, rolling and conventional pipe making. It features stable surface polishing effect and better weather resistance than J2/J5. It is the most cost-effective choice for regular indoor decorative projects with no complex deep drawing or grooving requirements.
Limitations: Poor performance for ultra-deep stamping and sharp-angle bending.
4.3 201 J2 (Low Copper & High Carbon, Economic Flat Grade)
J2 has low copper and high carbon content, resulting in high hardness and poor toughness. It is only suitable for flat cutting and simple circular rolling. Sharp 90° bending, grooving and stamping easily cause cracking and edge bursting. Its corrosion resistance is weak, and rust spots will appear quickly in humid environments. The polishing finish is ordinary with fine texture defects.
Limitations: For dry indoor use only; no complex forming processing allowed.
4.4 201 J5 (Ultra-Low Copper & Max Carbon, Lowest-Cost Basic Grade)
J5 is the most economical grade in the entire J series, with the highest carbon and lowest copper content. It features maximum hardness and the worst ductility and corrosion resistance. It cannot withstand any bending, grooving or stamping processing, and is only applicable for straight flat plates and simple straight pipes. The surface is prone to fogging and tiny sand holes after polishing, and it rusts rapidly in humid air.
Limitations: Strictly limited to fully dry, closed indoor temporary structures.
5. Professional Application Classification
