Complete Guide for Stainless Steel Plate Protective Film: Types, Thickness, Effects and Selection Rules

1. Common Protective Film Types for Stainless Steel Sheets

Almost all stainless steel protective films on the market adopt PE (polyethylene) substrate with environmental pressure-sensitive adhesive, featuring no residue, easy peeling and good fitting performance. According to appearance, viscosity and functional usage, they are divided into the following mainstream types:

Transparent PE Film The most universal basic film. High light transmittance, clear view of the steel plate surface texture. Mainly used for dust prevention, daily scratch resistance and short-term protection of 2B, brushed and matte stainless steel surfaces.

Blue PE Film High cost-performance industrial grade film, stable viscosity, uniform fitting. Widely used for conventional stainless steel plates, mechanical processing and factory turnover protection, suitable for most ordinary cold-rolled steel sheets.

Black & White Two-Tone Film White outer layer + black adhesive layer. Good shading, anti-aging and UV resistance. Ideal for outdoor storage, long-term stock protection and architectural decorative stainless steel panels, effectively avoiding surface yellowing and adhesive aging.

Milk White / Opaque White Film Strong hiding power, anti-scratch and anti-friction performance better than transparent film. Suitable for high-grade decorative stainless steel, elevator panels and kitchen equipment boards.

Laser Cutting Special Film High-temperature resistant and laser-specific film with uniform viscosity. No blistering, no glue residue during high-speed laser cutting, bending and stamping processing. Exclusive for precise processing of stainless steel sheets.

Printable Custom Film Support printing customer LOGO, specification information and anti-counterfeiting marks. Applied for branded stainless steel finished products and export customized orders.

2. Thickness Classification & Corresponding Performance

Protective film thickness is measured in μm (micron) (commonly called “silk” in the industry, 1 silk = 10 μm). Different thicknesses determine anti-collision, anti-scratch and processing resistance capabilities.

20–30μm (2–3 Silk, Ultra-Thin) Light and thin, low cost. Features: only dust-proof and slight scratch resistance, poor impact resistance. Application: indoor short-term turnover, finished product display protection, no secondary processing required.

40–50μm (4–5 Silk, Conventional Thin) Most common universal thickness.Features: balanced toughness and adhesion, basic anti-scratch and friction resistance. Application: ordinary 2B stainless steel plates, brushed plates, conventional handling and transportation protection.

60–80μm (6–8 Silk, Medium Thickness) Enhanced toughness and tensile strength. Features: resistant to slight collision, cutting and bending damage, not easy to tear. Application: stainless steel plates needing bending, punching and simple mechanical processing.

100–150μm (10–15 Silk, Heavy-Duty Thick) High strength and impact resistance. Features: strong anti-collision, anti-pressure and high-temperature resistance, stable for long-distance transportation and harsh processing. Application: 8K mirror stainless steel, colored decorative plates, thick plates, laser cutting and stamping mass production processing.

3. Viscosity & Surface Protection Effect Classification

Viscosity directly affects fitting stability and peeling effect; matched with different stainless steel surface finishes to avoid residual glue or film falling off.

Micro/Low Viscosity Effect: super easy to peel, zero residual glue, no damage to the surface. Matched surface: 8K mirror stainless steel, ultra-fine polished surface, high-gloss decorative plate.

Medium Viscosity Effect: firm fitting, no falling off during transportation and handling, smooth peeling without residue. Matched surface: conventional 2B surface, brushed finish, matte stainless steel plate (the most widely used type).

High Viscosity Effect: strong adhesion, fits tightly on rough surfaces, resistant to severe friction and mechanical processing. Matched surface: coarse drawing surface, sandblasted surface, textured stainless steel plate, deep processing scenarios.

4. How to Choose the Right Stainless Steel Protective Film (Selection Rules)

4.1 Select by Steel Plate Surface Type

Mirror / High-gloss Surface: Choose low-viscosity transparent or milk white film (40–60μm). Avoid high viscosity to prevent residual glue and surface fogging after peeling.

Brushed / Matte / 2B Surface: Choose medium-viscosity blue/black-white film (50–80μm). Stable adhesion, no falling off during daily handling.

Sandblasted / Textured / Rough Surface: Choose high-viscosity medium-thick film (80–100μm). Ensure full fitting on uneven surfaces.

4.2 Select by Processing & Usage Scenario

No processing, only storage & transportation: 30–50μm conventional film, cost-effective dust and scratch protection.

Laser cutting / Bending / Stamping: 80–120μm laser special thick film, high temperature resistant, no blistering, no glue residue.

Long-term outdoor storage / Export shipment: Black-white two-tone film (60–100μm), UV anti-aging, resistant to wind and sun exposure.

High-end finished products / Elevator & decoration panels: High-quality low-residue milk white or transparent film, ensure flawless surface after peeling.

4.3 Select by Service Life Requirement

Short-term (within 1 month): Thin transparent/blue film

Medium-term (1–6 months): Conventional medium-thick single-color film

Long-term (more than 6 months / cross-season storage): Black-white composite anti-aging film

5. Key Selection Precautions

Never use high-viscosity film on mirror stainless steel, otherwise residual glue is difficult to clean and will damage the high-gloss finish.

Thin film is forbidden for laser cutting and bending processing, as it is easy to tear and cause plate surface scratches.

Outdoor exposure scenarios must use UV-resistant two-tone film; ordinary single-color film is prone to aging and glue overflow.

All matched films adopt environmental water-based pressure-sensitive adhesive, ensuring zero residue, easy peeling, no corrosion on stainless steel surface.
