2. Double-Layer Material Classification (Stainless Steel Core + Outer Plastic Coating)

The performance differences of plastic-coated wire ropes are completely determined by the inner stainless steel core material and the outer plastic coating material. The two types of materials can be freely matched to adapt to different working conditions, budgets and service environments. The detailed classification is as follows.

2.1 Inner Stainless Steel Wire Rope Material (Load-Bearing Core Layer)

Commercial mainstream materials include three major series: 201, 304 and 316, covering economical, general-purpose and high-end anti-corrosion grades. Conventional and low-carbon versions are available to meet different corrosion resistance and service life requirements.

2.1.1 201 Stainless Steel Series (Economical Grade for Indoor Use Only)

Subdivided into four grades: J1, J3, J2 and J5. As a domestic manganese-nickel-saving stainless steel, it features high cost performance and is the main material for low-end decoration and temporary protection scenarios.

201 J1: Adopts high-copper and low-carbon formula with the best toughness, no wire breakage or cracking under slight bending, and optimal indoor anti-rust performance. Suitable for scenarios requiring slight bending and fine protection, ranking as the best comprehensive grade in the 201 series.

201 J3: A balanced cost-performance grade with medium hardness, toughness and anti-rust ability, stable in performance. It adapts to most conventional indoor decoration and simple traction scenarios and occupies the largest market share.

201 J2: Low-copper and high-carbon material with high hardness and poor toughness. It is only suitable for flat use and prohibits bending and deformation, exclusively for simple fixed installation in dry indoor environments.

201 J5: Ultra-low-cost grade with the highest carbon content and lowest copper content. It features poor toughness, brittle fracture tendency and the weakest anti-rust performance, only applicable to temporary and simple scenarios with dry environment, no load and no deformation.

Application Scope: Only for dry indoor environments, indoor decoration, invisible protective nets, indoor simple fixing and temporary traction. Prohibited for outdoor, humid, coastal and chemical environments, as long-term exposure will cause rusting and strand breakage.

2.1.2 304 / 304L Stainless Steel (General Mainstream Grade, Outdoor Standard)

National standard food-grade and industrial general stainless steel, resistant to ordinary atmospheric corrosion, rainwater and mild acid and alkali. It has balanced toughness, tensile strength and fatigue resistance. 304L is a low-carbon version with better welding performance and no intergranular corrosion, ensuring higher stability for long-term outdoor use. As the mainstream material for plastic-coated wire ropes, it adapts to most civil, outdoor and conventional industrial scenarios.

Application Scope: Outdoor overhead laying, garden fences, balcony protection, communication optical cable messenger wires, daily hoisting traction, outdoor decoration and ordinary water environment equipment, supporting long-term open-air use.

2.1.3 316 / 316L Stainless Steel (High-End Anti-Corrosion Grade for Harsh Working Conditions)

Contains molybdenum element, possessing excellent resistance to salt spray, seawater, strong acid and alkali, and chemical corrosion, ranking the top of stainless steel anti-corrosion performance. The low-carbon 316L version eliminates corrosion embrittlement, with far longer service life and better tensile stability and fatigue resistance than 304, at a higher price.

Application Scope: Coastal salt spray environments, mariculture, marine ship equipment, chemical workshops, sewage treatment equipment, high-humidity and high-corrosion industrial scenarios, and high-precision equipment traction.

2.2 Outer Plastic Coating Classification (Protective & Wear-Resistant Layer, Core Selection Standard)

Three mainstream coating materials are widely used in the industry: PE (High-Density Polyethylene), PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and PA Nylon. They differ greatly in weather resistance, wear resistance, temperature resistance and application scenarios, with clear industry selection standards for communication and outdoor projects.

2.2.1 PE Coating (HDPE, Industry Standard for Outdoor Projects)

The standard coating for communication and outdoor engineering, added with professional UV-resistant and anti-aging additives, delivering the best comprehensive practicability among all coating materials.

Core Performance: Excellent UV resistance, no pulverization, cracking or peeling; wide temperature resistance range (-40℃~+70℃), adaptable to severe cold in northern regions and intense sunlight in southern regions; zero water absorption, resistant to rainwater, salt spray and weak acid and alkali; halogen-free, environmentally friendly and flame-retardant, stable insulation without interfering with communication signals; strong coating adhesion, no peeling under long-term thermal expansion and contraction.

Advantages: Outdoor service life of 20–30 years, adaptable to all-weather open-air environments, low failure rate and maintenance-free.

Disadvantages: Slightly lower surface wear resistance than nylon, with minor wear under high-frequency pulley friction.

Exclusive Applications: Figure-8 self-supporting optical cable messenger wires, communication tower stay wires, outdoor overhead lines, municipal outdoor protection, garden open-air fences and long-term outdoor fixed traction.

2.2.2 PVC Coating (Economical Grade, Indoor Temporary Use Only)

A low-cost general-purpose plastic with basic protective performance but extremely poor outdoor adaptability, explicitly prohibited for permanent outdoor engineering in the industry.

Core Performance: Basic flame retardancy, low cost, smooth surface and good insulation; poor weather resistance, easy aging, embrittlement, peeling and pulverization under long-term sunlight exposure; hardening and cracking at low temperature, easy moisture absorption in humid environments that accelerates internal wire rope rusting.

Advantages: Low procurement cost, cost-effective for short-term indoor scenarios.

Disadvantages: Poor UV and temperature resistance, halogen-containing, releasing corrosive flue gas during combustion that damages equipment and lines.

Exclusive Applications: Only for indoor machine room temporary traction, simple indoor decoration, indoor protective nets and short-term temporary fixing. Prohibited for outdoor, permanent communication engineering and coastal scenarios.

2.2.3 PA Nylon Coating (High-End Wear-Resistant Grade for High-Frequency Friction)

Engineering-grade plastic with the best wear resistance among the three coatings, serving as a high-end upgraded coating material.

Core Performance: Super wear resistance, tear resistance, excellent toughness against repeated pulley friction, no shelling or damage; oil resistance and mild corrosion resistance, smooth and burr-free surface that will not scratch equipment; superior insulation and anti-aging performance.

Advantages: Far longer service life than PE and PVC under high-frequency movement and repeated tensile friction, with excellent fatigue resistance.

Disadvantages: Highest price, slightly weaker outdoor UV resistance than professional weather-resistant PE.

Exclusive Applications: Hoisting pulley traction, elevator compensation ropes, precision equipment transmission, stage suspension cables, pet traction ropes and other wire rope scenarios with high-frequency reciprocating movement.
